There’s still time to donate back-to-school items for children in Greene County.

Jefferson Telecom has teamed up with Adopt-A-Family for a second consecutive year to host the back-to-school supply drive.

Marketing Director Jody Schulte says needed items include new backpacks, number two pencils, red, blue and black ink pens, glue sticks, wide-ruled spiral notebooks, loose-leaf wide-ruled paper, a box of 16 count crayons and washable markers.

She points out that supplies should be dropped off by August 1st and those materials will be given to the Greene County Adopt-A-Family organization to be given to area children who are in need of back-to-school supplies.

Greene County Fair Ends With High Marks

This year’s Greene County Fair finished with record-breaking numbers again at the junior premium auction on Monday.

ISU Greene County Extension Coordinator Michael Cooley says the auction raised $24,540 for 157 youth in 4-H and FFA that showed at the fair.

Last year, the event brought in close to $23,000 for 127 youth.

Cooley points out that they get great community support for an event like this and 4-H and FFA are examples of youth enhancing their lives through their projects and events at the fair.

Next year’s Greene County Fair is scheduled for the week following the 4th of July weekend in 2015.

Tree Brushing Starts Next Week In Jefferson

A reminder for Jefferson residents that the City will be chipping yard brush for free next week.

From Monday through Thursday, residents can place their tree brush in arm piles with the cut ends facing the street by the curbside for safety and efficiency reasons.

City crews will pick up and chip your brush for free but it may not be on your normal garbage pickup day.  Whole trees will not be picked up and weather will also be a factor.

The service will continue to be at the end of each full week for the rest of the year.

Anyone will questions can call City Hall at 386-3111 during normal business hours.

Tuesday’s Fire Destroys Shed In Jefferson

Just after midnight, the Jefferson Fire Department, the Greene County Sheriff’s office and the Greene County Emergency Medical Services responded to a steel shed fire at 1119 J Avenue.

Sheriff Steve Haupert says when a deputy arrived on scene, the 36-by-38-foot steel structure was fully engulfed in flames.  After about 90-minutes, the roof of the structure had collapsed and fire personnel extinguished the flames to prevent any further damage from spreading.

Haupert points out that the owner, Lynn Hardin, believes the fire may have been caused by a log fire that he had started the previous day and may not have completely put it out.

Fire Chief Randy Love says no one was injured in the incident and the building is said to be a total loss with several snowmobiles and tools included.
