The ADM Tigers defense has become accustomed to facing teams that exclusively run spread shotgun offenses, and for the most part, has performed quite well against such systems.

Tigers head coach Mike Whisner said last week that facing so many teams that run the spread system (each of ADM’s first four opponents did) has made things easier from a scouting and game-planning perspective, but now things change a bit with Friday’s home matchup against the Winterset Huskies (2-2, 1-1 District). Winterset head coach Zach Sweeney said his squad runs about 50 percent of its snaps from the wishbone and the other 50 percent from the straight-I formation and spread shotgun.

In particular, the Tigers (2-2, 1-1 District) will have to concern themselves with Huskies do-it-all fullback Brandon Herr, who creates a considerable matchup issue.

“Brandon’s a dynamic kid for us, can do a little bit of everything,” Sweeney said. “If we can kind of get the fullback going, that will get us in an offensive rhythm, if you will.”

Herr, a senior, has in fact done a little bit of everything this season. He’s tied for the team lead with 12 catches and leads the team with 134 receiving yards and two receiving scores. He’s also chipped in 77 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground, and has completed a 49-yard pass. Upon first glance, it’s very surprising to see a fullback lead his team in receiving yards, but Sweeney said Herr also lines up as a wide receiver when the team does break into a spread shotgun formation.

As for ADM, Sweeney said he was most concerned with the Tigers’ ability to spread the ball around. He said Tigers quarterback Frank Weiland can make every throw, and pointed out that ADM has five players who have caught at least nine passes.

The Tigers and Huskies  kickoff at 7:30 tomorrow night on K107 and raccoonvalleyradio.com.
