When Greene County and Perry face each other in sports, the outcomes are sometimes unpredictable, and on occasion, controversial and/or confusing. On Monday night in the middle school gym in Jefferson, the Jayettes won a non-conference volleyball game in five sets and the last point came in most unusual fashion. The Jayettes won 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-13.

The fifth set saw Perry led 13-8, and 14-11, but the Rams closed the gap to 13-14 and were serving to for the tie. Coach Kautzky of Perry approached the floor official calling for timeout, which that official appeared to grant. However, the chair official had whistled the ball ready for play and the Rams served into the net for an error, which was the set and game winning point. Confusion followed initially with nearly everyone in the gym wondering if it was a timeout or if the service error stood and the contest was over.

The floor official told Raccoon Valley Radio following the action that she made the correct call, and the timeout should not have been granted since the ball had been whistled ready for play. The chair official told RVR there was so much noise in the gym that he did not hear a second whistle from his officiating partner.

Eleven Greene County senior volleyball players appeared in front of the home fans for the final time. The Rams (13-17) end the regular season with five losses in a row and head to Nevada on Oct. 27 to open Class 3A regional play against the fifth rated Cubs.
