With one game left in the regular season the Greene County football team knows it will be in the Class 3A playoffs on Wednesday, Oct. 29. That’s about all anyone knows at this point. Once-beaten and eighth rated Carroll visits Linduska Field in Jefferson to close the regular season. The Tigers are 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the district. Coach Dennis McCartan’s team will wrap up the district title if they win the game, but the Rams would get a piece of the crown if they pull the upset. Coach Dean Lansman’s Rams are 4-4 overall and 4-1 in district play. Humboldt is 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the district and if the Wildcats beat Perry and the Rams upset Carroll, there would be a three-way tie for the title.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association Board of Control will set first round playoff pairings late Friday night, but it could be Saturday morning before pairings are released to the public. The only think know at this point is if the Rams are third in the district they would open with the runner-up from another district. Greene County can finish no lower than third place in 3A District 2. The district champions will play fourth place teams from another district.  Among the changes from last year is a 125 mile travel limit for first round playoff games, and the Board of Control will set the pairings after each round, so second opponents for Nov. 5 won’t be known until after games of Oct. 29.
