When asked before the start of ADM girls basketball’s first practice on Monday about his emotions heading into his first true experience at the helm of his new team, first-year head coach said he was both excited and nervous to get started. That mix of emotions was similarly felt by several players, including senior guard Emily Hoffman, who has experience with turnover at the top.

“It’s a little bit of both. I’m excited because it’s a fresh start  — start something new, might as well. And then it’s nerve-racking because we have to start from the beginning all over again,” Hoffman said. “We did that — I think our old coach, my freshman year or eighth grade year he was new — so we did it all over again and now we’ll do it one more time. But I’m excited to see what he can do.”

Just one of three seniors, Hoffman said she’s looking to assert herself more in the offense this year by shooting more often. She averaged just 1.9 points per game on 26 percent shooting last season but lead the team with 58 assists. Because of that ability to see the floor well, Hoffman is battling for the starting point guard position with junior Brianna Mueller and sophomore Allie Cook.

The Tigers’ lone exhibition of the season is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20 against Creston at Southwestern Community College as part of the Girls Varsity Jamboree. ADM then opens the regular season at home against Norwalk at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24.
