So much for the value of numbers early in a basketball season. Nevada entered Friday night’s boys’ basketball game in Jefferson shooting 59% from the free throw line and making an average of six three-point goals in their first three contests. Against Greene County, the Cubs went 28 of 32 from the charity stripe (87.5%) and they made nine three-pointers, six in the first half. The Cubs improved to 4-0 while the Rams fell to 3-1, all in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.

Junior Cole Gidel had 24 points for Nevada and Zach Hansen added 11. Nevada was nine of 26 shooting three’s and 16 of 43 overall with 16 turnovers.The Cubs trailed 42-36 with 4:15 to play in the third quarter before going on a 17-0 scoring run to take a lead they would not surrender.

Sophomore Trey Tucker had 24 points for Greene County, his lowest scoring total in the first four games of the season. Seniors Landon Braun and Riah Nelsen each scored 10 points. The Rams went six of 28 on three-point attempts and 20 of 55 overall. They were 13 of 25 from the foul line and also had 16 turnovers.

Greene County plays Saturday afternoon on the road at non-conference foe Perry at approximately 3:45 p.m.
