Labeling a high school senior “the old man” probably isn’t fair, but Greene County basketball player Landon Braun is the “old guy” when it comes to varsity experience. Called up to the varsity during his freshman season by then head coach Mike McGinnis, Braun has been a mainstay ever since. The lefty has grown from not much over five feet tall as a ninth grader to about 5′ 10″ now. He’s the program’s career leader in made three-point field goals, and will have played in more than 75 varsity games by the time with the Rams is done.

The Rams are 4-3 overall and 4-2 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play. Braun is the second leading scorer at 9.6 points a game. He’s also second on the squad in assists, total field goals made, and made three-point field goals.

He talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about his maturation as a player from ninth grade to today. “It was kind of different feel when I was a freshman as you would guess. I was kind of the fresh fish. I was in the dark about a few things, but as the years have gone along, I matured. Now, I have some other young guys that are there, so I’m just trying to teach them some stuff that I didn’t necessarily learn freshman year, to help them progress in the future.”

The Rams resume practice today after taking a break last week. The team will scrimmage at Ogden later this week, and will resume playing games on Jan. 6 in Des Moines vs. Saydel.
