Boy track athletes from all over the state will head to one of the largest indoor meets of the season today, at Iowa State University. Guthrie Center head boys track coach Colin Shawgo says indoor meets are faster than outdoor meets in someways and slower in others.
Shawgo says due to the building constraints, indoor meets feel faster. “It does seem like everything goes a lot faster in the indoor meets, because it is such a shorter lap. Plus, it always seems to be so much more loud and electric because everyone is in this tight space together. I think that affects how the kids run.”
In reality, though, Shawgo says indoor meets can be slower for distance runners. “It’s pretty well balanced for anything less than 400 meters, but higher than that outdoors is typically faster for distance guys because they have less turns they have to negotiate outdoors.”
The action in Ames begins at 3 p.m.
