976290_397601067019919_65945054_oThe seventh annual Bar2Barbara event, taking place this weekend in Adair County, will aim to raise awareness of an awful disease.

Organizer Sarah Smith says she launched the event after her mother passed away. “Barbara was my mom’s name, and she passed away in 2008 from a disease called Huntington’s Disease. Prior to my mom being diagnosed with the disease, I had never heard of it, so awareness was definitely an issue. It’s a disease that’s call ‘the devil’s disease’, and for good reason. If you were to combine Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and ALS into one awful disease, you would end up with Huntington’s Disease.”

Smith says the event begins Friday night with a variety of family-friendly activities. “There are a lot of kid’s activities beginning at 6 p.m. There’s going to be scavenger hunts, a sand sculpture creation contest, plus a pool party at the Greenfield pool. The kids will be entertained from about 6-10:45 p.m. During that time there will be live music at the bowling as part of an event for the adults to get to know each other.”

The activities continue Saturday with a 10 kilometer walk/run/ride, dare show, live music and a beer garden.

Smith says all proceeds from the event go towards the University of Iowa’s research in the fight against Huntington’s Disease. She’ll tell us more about it today on Let’s Talk Guthrie County. It airs during the 9 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. hours on K107.9 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
