The window for selling fireworks legally in the State of Iowa is currently open, and statewide potential vendors have been applying for licenses in high numbers.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office opened its online licensing portal for fireworks, and within the first 24 hours, they saw more than 88 applications started and 46 submitted. According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, more applications are anticipated, because over 600 individuals and companies have established accounts that will allow them to apply for licenses.

In Perry, Chamber of Commerce Director Bob Wilson says they are taking the sale of fireworks very seriously. “Obviously we don’t want to hinder any business in the town. So if there’s vendors or people that can make some money there, and it’s within the law, we’ll support that. But we will not allow them at the park, during our events. Our vendors will not sell them either. It’s a serious deal. It’s a safety concern of mine as a parent. Growing up, I remember what you can do with these fireworks, and we have to take them very seriously. I do want people to enjoy them, I obviously love some good fireworks. But the Chamber’s going to take it very seriously. At all of our events, we will make sure that it is kid-friendly and very safe.”

The sale of consumer fireworks is allowed in Iowa between June 1st and July 8th, and from December 10th through January 3rd. Individuals or companies that apply for licenses to sell must submit an application and a site plan, which shows compliance with the state statute. Inspectors for the State Fire Marshal, which includes some local fire departments, will visit the sites to ensure they are meeting the requirements.
