With just one game remaining on the regular season schedule, the Greene County baseball team has found itself in a position similar to its early season form– looking for offense. The Rams started the year with a 1-4 record with an offense that produced little in the way of runs. As the season went along, the offense improved, as did the win total. Just a week ago, the Rams were on a streak of nine wins in a 10 game stretch, but last week found the team with a sputtering offense and a pair of 2-0 losses. That leaves Coach John Hupp’s team with a 14-10 season record and a 7-6 mark in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference with a make up game at 4 p.m. tomorrow vs. North Polk in Alleman to end the regular season. The unusual starting time was required because NP hosts a regional softball game on Monday at 7 p.m. and the softball and baseball fields in Alleman are too close together for games to play played safely on field diamonds at the same time.

The Rams fell to the Comets on Friday by a 2-0 score on Senior Night at Allensworth Field in Jefferson. They mustered just two hits and three total base runners while striking out nine times against NP senior Jake Johnson. On July 2 in Ogden, the 20-5 Bulldogs topped the Rams 2-0 and Greene County had just three hits and five total base runners in that game. Going back to a 6-4 victory over PCM on June 30, Greene County has been scoreless in its last 15 innings.

NP is 11-2 in the league and has clinched at least a tie for the HOIAC title and a win Monday vs. the Rams would give them the crown outright. A Greene County victory would give Saydel (Des Moines) a chance at tying the Comets for first place, pending the outcome of make up games for the Eagles.
