Perry recognized long time head baseball coach Mike Long last night prior to the start of Perry’s regular season finale. Long has served as Perry’s head coach since the summer of 1978 and announced at the beginning of the year that this would be his final summer coaching Perry baseball with a desire to spend more time with his kids and grandchildren. Long has guided six Perry teams to the state tournament with three runner up finishes. He has captured numerous conference titles including Midwest, Little Hawkeye and Raccoon River conference titles. His first victory came on May 25th, 1978 against ADM. He celebrated his 500th career win in 2005 with a 7-2 win over Gilbert. Recently, he eclipsed the 700 career win plateau following a victory over Carroll.
Long is a member of the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Girls Basektball Coaches Hall of Fame and the Grandview University Hall of Fame.
Perry school superintendent Clark Wicks presented Long with a jersey commemorating his Bluejay career. A dessert bar was held afterward for players and families.
