The Dallas County Secondary Roads Department currently operates at an assortment of locations, but there’s a plan in place to move nearly everything to one, central site.

County Engineer Al Miller says the central maintenance facility is located just south of the intersection of highways 169 and 44, and if all goes according to plan it will eventually be the primary site for equipment and personnel. “What I’d like to do is consolidate not only our buildings, but get everybody reporting as much as possible to the same location. I think it’d make our operation and our communication much better. And that location at our central maintenance facility is nice for our operation as far as being centrally located.”

Miller says the proposal involves three phases. The first has already been approved by the Board of Supervisors, and involves constructing a new cold storage facility at the central site. He expects the bid letting to take place this fall, with construction slated for next spring. Phase two will include the consolidation of many outlying facilities and constructing a new one in Redfield. Miller says there’s currently around 10 facilities countywide, and he hopes to sell most of them and bring everything into the central site, as well as the Perry, Redfield, and Granger locations.

The final phase would be to construct a new administrative office at the central maintenance facility to replace the current offices in Adel. Miller emphasizes that phase two and three have not been approved yet, but if they are everything should be wrapped up and transitioned within five years.
