Iowa-Dept-of-Revenue

The annual Iowa Sales Tax Holiday starts today, and the Perry Chamber of Commerce invites people to shop for their back-to-school items locally.

For today and tomorrow, any qualifying clothing or footwear item with a selling price less than $100 is exempt from any state sales and local option tax. The tax holiday was created 19 years ago by the Iowa Department of Revenue, as a way to help parents and guardians buy school-related items for their children before the new school year begins. Chamber Director Lynsi Pasutti says while getting clothes for kids is one great aspect of tax free weekend, adults can also take advantage of the savings in Perry.

“I think people are geared for back-to-school, and so they want to find things for their kids. But you can go and get some nice new clothes for yourself or whatever. So really thinking about, instead of driving all the way into Des Moines or where ever you choose to shop, think about some of the options here while you’re already here in town. There’s some great places here, and so just check them out!”

Some items that are tax exempt include: everyday clothing and footwear; uniforms for work and school; coats, bathing suits, leotards, and tights; costumes; and diapers. Any businesses that are open today and tomorrow that sell qualifying items are required to participate.
