Today is the final day of Iowa’s Tax Free Holiday Weekend.

Any article of clothing or footwear with a selling price under $100 is exempt from any state sales or local option sales tax today. The exemption is for each article that is priced under $100 regardless of however many items are sold to an individual. Any businesses that are open today and sell these items are required to participate in the Tax Free Holiday Weekend.  Items that are not included in the exemption are: watches, jewelry, handkerchiefs, special clothing or footwear designed primarily for athletic activity or protective use and not usually considered appropriate for everyday wear, along with skis, rollerblades, skates and sporting equipment.

The Iowa Department of Revenue originally created the Tax Free Holiday Weekend to help parents and guardians buy school-related items before the school year begins.
