The new Perry Garbage Truck
The new Perry Garbage Truck

Today is the day garbage procedures in the City of Perry officially change, so don’t forget to roll out your new garbage can to the curb this week.

Public Works Director Jack Butler says they spent the better part of last week assembling and distributing several thousands of cans throughout Perry, each of which was paid for by the City. The new cans go along with the new arm truck, which Butler says will help with efficiency while cutting back on work-related injuries. Of course, with a new system comes all new procedures, and in this case there are several rules for how residents are to place the cans out for pick up. However, Butler says they distributed fliers with all the rules with each of the cans, so people should reference that if they’re confused about anything.

He admits the new process could take a while for people to get accustomed to, and to help with the adjustment period he’s enlisting additional help for the roll out. “We’re going to have crews running around behind the trucks this week and next week, and they’re going to have a notice. And you know if maybe you’ve stuck it (the can) next to the mailbox or the power pole, or we got a car that’s an issue, we’re going to put out notices, and we’re going to talk with folks. It’s a new system, and honestly we’re not the first city to do this, so it’s not like this isn’t a problem in every other community! So there’s ways to work around the problems, and we’re going to do that.”

Butler also reminds people that the cans are assigned to the property, not the owners. As such, if a resident were to move, they will need to leave the can with the house.
