The discussion on the possible merits and drawbacks of 3-D printed guns has increased recently. Iowa House District 20 Democratic Candidate Warren Varley gave his thoughts on the possibility of an increased amount and circulation of these types of weapons.
“The dangers to society are obvious of allowing terrorists to purchase equipment that would allow them to print untraceable plastic guns that are undetectable by metal detectors. Clearly this provides a risk. I’m a firm believer in the second amendment and protecting a citizen’s rights to bear arms but I do not think that the first amendment should be invoked to protect the dissemination of these weapons.”
Varley also said that it will be difficult to regulate the production of these weapons as blueprints for many of the models have already been well circulated over the internet. To hear more on this and other topics, listen to Varley on today’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County program.
