Sweet Corn 2018

The 39th annual Adel Sweet Corn Festival is this Saturday, but before you can eat any free sweet corn, it must first be shucked.

With that in mind, the Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce is once again hosting “The Shucking of the Corn” tomorrow behind the Adel Public Safety Building. Festival Committee member Macinzie McFarland says the shucking is a much bigger deal than the uninitiated may realize. She adds, they’ve already had a lot of help promised, but emphasizes there’s always room for more. “This year the Sportsmen Club and Boy Scout Troop #152 will be helping out. It’s open to anybody, though, to come down and help shuck the corn. Obviously we have 15,000 ears of corn to be shucked, so (it’s) the more help the merrier kind of a deal.”

In addition to the shucking, the public is invited to watch the Sweet Corn Princess Coronation at the stage and pavilion, where one lucky Adel-DeSoto-Minburn student will be crowned, and two more will be named attendants. Raccoon Valley Radio’s Big Red Radio will also be there for tomorrow’s festivities to play music and provide public address services. The shucking runs from 5:30-8:30 p.m., and the Princess contest will begin at 6.
