For more than two decades, one of the most popular events every year for Dallas County Conservation is the Prairie Awakening Celebration.

Now referred to as “Prairie Awoke,” the event will be held this Sunday from 4-8 p.m. at the Kuehn Conservation Area. Conservation Outreach Coordinator Ken Keffer says the celebration is something everyone should see in their lifetime, as it’s both entertaining and moving. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio what people can look forward to this year. “This has been going on for for over 20 years, and we’re really excited to have some of our favorites back again this year. So the theme this year is ‘The Elders and Trees,’ and so there will be a planting of four bur oak trees, one in each of the cardinal directions. And these are kind of both physical and symbolic gestures to honor our elders.”

Some of the other festivities for this year include: the return of Dallas Chief Eagle, who is a champion hoop dancer; local traditional drum performances; and a raptor released back into the wild after rehabilitation. Additionally, attendees will be invited to participate in the reawakening of the prairie, which Keffer says is always a touching moment to be a part of. People can bring their own seating and concessions will be available, but pets are not allowed at the event.

There is no cost to attend, and registration is not required. To learn more, listen to Monday’s Perry Fareway Let’s Talk Dallas County program at RaccoonValleyRadio.com.
