Greene County improved to 6-1 on the high school football season with a hard fought 35-21 victory over Atlantic in Jefferson at Linduska Field in the Rams’ homecoming game on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. The Rams are 2-1 in Class 2A District 9 while the Trojans fell to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the district.

Atlantic led 7-0 early in the second quarter, but the Rams tied it at 7-7. Greene County led 14-7, but the Trojans knotted the score at 14-14. The Rams passed up a short field goal try with time running out in the first half and were thrown for a loss on fourth and goal at the two, so the score remained tied at halftime. The Trojans ate up half of the third quarter and regained the lead at 21-14 on the first drive of quarter number three, but again, Greene County answered and it was 21-21 at the end of three periods. Greene County took the lead for good with 5:24 left in the game and added an insurance scored with 2:17 remaining.

Senior Clint Dennhardt had rushing touchdowns of 16, 0ne, and two yards, and junior Colby Kafer added scoring runs covering 38 and 48 yards, both in the second half. Junior Cael Fisher was five for five kicking extra points. The Rams ran the ball 32 times for 279 yards and five TDs. Junior Brent Riley was 5-18-1 through the air for 132 yards, all but 13 of those came in the first half. The Rams had a season low eight penalties for 75 yards, also the lowest in 2018.

Atlantic had 393 yards and 21 points, both season highs vs. the Greene County defense. Senior quarterback Chase Mullinex was 13-27-2 passing for 254 yards and one TD pass, while he ran 26 times for 81 yards. The Trojans were penalized 12 times for 93 yards.

Junior Carter Morton intercepted a pair of Mullinex passes. Atlantic recovered a Greene County fumble as well as intercepting one pass, so the turnovers were even at two apiece.

Junior defensive back Will Hansen was our Moo Meat Unsung Hero and Kafer was the Fouch Agri-Service Player of the Game.

Next for the Rams is the longest road trip of the season to Red Oak on Oct. 12. The Tigers are 4-3, 2-1, after losing at home to Kuemper Catholic on Friday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m. with coverage at 6 p.m. on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
