Harvest in Greene County
Harvest in Greene County

As we begin the month of November, harvest season continues to be underway in Greene County.

Landus Cooperative Field Agronomist Zach Minnihan says yield estimates in the county for corn are between 190 to 200 bushels per acre, whereas the majority of soybeans are coming in between 55 to 58 bushels per acre, with the high end at around 80 bushels. “Corn is actually been a bit better than probably we initially anticipated, maybe 10 to 15 bushel better than where we were kind of pinpointing say end of July time (frame). We’ve stepped back a little bit on soybeans I think, just having so much water and ponding. I think our low areas might have been a little bit bigger than we initially anticipated.”

Minnihan notes about 85 to 90-percent of soybeans have been harvested in Greene County, while 60 to 70-percent of corn has been harvested. He says Halloween is a benchmark for heading into the home stretch of the harvest season. Minnihan points out if it wasn’t for the rain and snow that happened in early October, harvest season would’ve ended early, but now it looks like the harvest season will end closer to the typical time frame of possibly mid-November.

According to the USDA Crop Report, as of October 28th, only 49-percent of corn and 71-percent of soybeans across Iowa has been harvested.
