Greene County basketball senior Trey Hinote entered the 2018-19 season needing less than 100 points to get to the 1,000 point mark in his career. It’s not known when he’ll get his next opportunity to play and climb closer to the milestone after suffering an injury early in Friday night’s 79-47 Heart of Iowa Activities Conference loss in Jewell to Class 2A number 5 South Hamilton.

Hinote and the Rams got off to a hot start by making 4 baskets from three-point range in the first 3:12 of the game and scoring 16 points, leading 14-6. Hinote was two of three, all from three-point range, when after making his second three, he fell to his back and grabbed his right leg. Teammates helped him off the court and he put no weight on that leg. After the game, Greene County head coach Chris Nelson told Raccoon Valley Radio he wasn’t sure whether it was a severe ankle sprain or a fracture. Either way, the sharp shooting guard figures to miss playing time.

SH went to work immediately after Hinote’s injury, quickly overcoming the eight point deficit, taking a 22-19 lead after one quarter. The Hawks led 45-28 at halftime and 67-34 at the end of the third quarter.

Conner Hill led the Hawks with 29 points, while Logan Peters and Cade Balvanz each scored 17. Unofficially, SH went 31 of 49 from the field and 14 of 19 from the free throw line. The Hawks made three of 10 shots from three-point range.

The Rams were led in scoring by Lance Hughes with 14 points and Carter Morton with 13. Greene County was 14 of 49 from the field unofficially and nine of 14 from the foul line. The Rams made eight of 29 shots beyond the arc.

SH is 2-0 overall and 1-1 in conference play while the Rams start league play at 0-1 and are 2-1 overall.
