A U.S. Representative had a final event with constituents, as the representative-elect met with residents in Guthrie County this weekend.

Congressman David Young (R) visited with Guthrie Center residents Saturday at the downtown Reindeer Express event. Young commented on the potential of Congress voting on a new Farm Bill this week, “So we’re going to get the Farm Bill done here before the end of the year and that’s very, very important for Iowa, for our rural communities and give farmers and producers certainty. And with that we need to make sure that we continue to fight hard to get free and fair trade agreements. It looks like the agreement with Mexico and NAFTA could be considered here in the next few months if not this year then in the next legislative session, and just continuing to work on China and be tough with them and make sure that they’re abiding by the rules and the treatment is better and continue to pursue bilateral agreements as well with other countries.”

Young’s Democratic challenger Cindy Axne who was elected this November to represent Iowa’s 3rd District met with the Guthrie County Democrats at former Iowa Department of Public Health Director Dr. Mary Hansen’s residence in Panora Sunday. Axne said she believes Guthrie County could move in a democratic direction at the next general election, “I’m just glad to be here and I tell you why because after listening to all of you right here it’s exactly why I’m going to Washington, because you’re incredible people who are doing everything you can to make sure your communities are protected and have opportunity and that every single person within them has a voice and feels like they’re apart of that community with their neighbors and so keep doing what you’re doing.”

Axne said that she hopes to be in the House’s Agriculture and Financial Services committees. The 116th U.S. legislative session is expected to begin as early as January 3rd.
