Marc Ray of Perry, the adoptive father of 16-year-old Sabrina Ray, pleaded guilty Friday afternoon to four charges related to the teen’s death.

Marc was originally charged with 17 counts stemming from the May 12, 2017 death of his adopted daughter in his home in Perry. However, he reached a plea agreement with the State of Iowa through the Dallas County Attorney’s Office. Per the agreement, 13 of the charges were dropped and the other four were amended. Marc pleaded guilty to one count of child endangerment resulting in death, a class B felony, and three counts of third degree kidnapping, a class C felony. With the guilty plea, he will avoid a jury trial, which was scheduled to be held on February 4, 2019 at the Woodbury County Courthouse in Sioux City.

Ray has not yet been sentenced, as the prosecution requested the sentencing hearing be delayed so the State can prepare impact statements for Judge Terry Rickers. The sentencing hearing will be held on January 11, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. in the Dallas County Courthouse. The maximum penalty for the four charges is a total of 80 years in prison and over $150,000 in fines, victim restitution, and surcharges. Rickers said Ray would be eligible for parole after serving between 30-70% of his most serious sentence, which would be between 15-35 years.

Marc’s wife, Misty Ray, who is also being charged in Sabrina’s death, has not reached a plea agreement with the State, and is still scheduled to be tried this February in Sioux City. During his statements at the plea hearing, Marc made no mention of his wife’s involvement, though he admitted his own guilt. He confessed that he failed to provide proper medical attention to Sabrina before her death, which was ruled to be a result of severe malnutrition as she weighed only 56 pounds at the time. He also admitted to installing locks on the doors and windows of a room in his house where he held Sabrina and two other adopted girls against their wills.

Marc is now the third of five defendants in the case to admit guilt, as his son Justin Ray and mother-in-law Carla Bousman also reached plea agreements with the State and have been sentenced to 10 and 20 years in prison, respectively. Misty Ray and the couple’s niece Josie Bousman also face prosecution for their involvement in Sabrina’s death. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
