Wrestling fans from both Adel-Desoto-Minburn and Dallas Center-Grimes Community Schools stuck around after the conclusion of Thursday’s varsity dual for a memorable exhibition match. Cael Lockhart, an ADM high school student born with Down Syndrome, took the mat against Dallas Center-Grimes senior Bain Broderick. The Raccoon Valley Radio Network was on hand for the match and spoke with ADM head wrestling coach Chris Hatchitt about how it came to fruition. “I contacted DCG’s coach (Cory) Stratton (about having an exhibition match for Lockart),” Hatchitt said, “The gentleman he wrestled, Bain Broderick from DCG, they’re family friends. So we coordinated a match. Since Broderick was (the Mustang’s) 160-pound varsity wrestler, we did the match after the dual. What a way to end the night.”

The two friends tangled for roughly four minutes before Lockhart brought Broderick’s shoulders to the mat for a pinfall victory. Lockhart had one other exhibition match after ADM’s Raccoon River Conference home triangular on December 13, but that match came against junior teammate Eli Jones. The ADM varsity wrestling team is spending their Saturday in Winterset competing in the annual Gary Christensen Invitational.
