Five of the six area Class 3A State Wrestling Tournament advanced to the second day of competition at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Dallas Center-Grimes brought four to “The Well” and three will wrestle on Friday. Both Dowling Catholic (West Des Moines) wrestlers from Woodward we are following also advanced. Two losses on Thursday means the end of the season, but going 1-0 or 1-1 allows an individual to wrestle on Friday morning.

DC-G went 1-3 in round one with the victory from junior Luke Fistler at 160 lbs. He won 19-9 over Trever Maiers of Epworth, Western Dubuque, and will face Parker Klocke of Carroll in Quarterfinals. Junior Trey Wells (126) lost by fall in 4:21 in round one, but came back in the consolation first round to win 13-9. Freshman Brayden Broderick lost his first match 7-0, then won 15-11 on the consolation side. Senior Bain Broderick bowed out of the tournament with a pair of losses by fall.

Ethan Mahoney from Woodward and Dowling Catholic lost a 13-2 major decision in round one before winning 5-2 in his consolation match. Alex Kirton of Woodward and also wrestling for Dowling Catholic dropped a first round decision 6-3, then won by fall in 4:38 in consolation action

We are following nine area 1A wrestlers at 1:30 p.m. today. The 20 area 2A wrestlers we’ll follow take the mats at 6 p.m.
