These past few weeks have been rather tough on the snow removal crews from the state to local levels.

Jefferson Public Works Director Dave Morlan says this past weekend, they worked 14 hours clearing the streets of snow. Then on Wednesday morning, crews were back out from 3 to 9am again, before being back out on the downtown square overnight last night to remove the remaining snow. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio when they use their large snowblower and deposit the snow from the square into dump trucks, they have designated sites where they put the snow.

Greene County Engineer Wade Weiss says the secondary roads crews likewise were out this past weekend working each day both on the paved and gravel roads in the county. He adds that they also worked on Monday and Tuesday, prepping the roads, by pushing the snow from the previous weekend’s snow event, back from the shoulder, so they could be ready for the overnight snow storm.

Even at the state level, officials haven’t seen this much snow removal activity in a long time, says Iowa Department of Transportation Winter Operations Administrator Craig Bragfrede.

“Typically when we’ve been going as hot and hard as have been here recently, we typically shift our staff members somewhere in that 8-10, no more than 12 hours at one stretch for any one operator. Then we like to get that one operator out and get them some rest and some down time.”

According to the National Weather Service, Greene County is predicted to see as much as five inches of snowfall this Saturday.
