A blizzard warning is causing headaches for law enforcement and plow crews in Greene County.

Sheriff Jack Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio some of the roads in the county remain impassible, a tow ban remains in place and travel is still not advised. He says they’ve responded easily to over 25 vehicles in the ditch and there are abandoned vehicles left out at intersections and on roadways across the county. Deputies have been working throughout the night and the morning rescuing people from their vehicles that have slid off of the roadway. He urges people to stay off of the roads today.

County Engineer Wade Weiss says the Secondary Roads Department assisted the Greene County Sheriff’s office with rescuing individuals from their vehicles until 12:30am and have since resumed that service. He adds that they have also assisted pulling Iowa Department of Transportation plow trucks out of snow drifts on the highways and will assist Midland Power Cooperative crews to help them get to areas where power outages have been reported so that power can be restored to residents. Plow crews will remain out until 5pm today clearing county roads.

Jefferson Public Works Department has been working all night long as well. Public Works Director Dave Morlan recommends to everyone to stay home until the city streets have been completely cleared. They’ve been able to open the streets up, but there will be blowing and drifting snow throughout the rest of the day. He adds that the snow ordinance will be in effect tonight for the downtown area as crews will be out picking up the snow.
