Emergency crews battled a house fire in Perry for several hours early Friday morning, after a construction mishap.

Assistant Fire Chief Brian Eiteman said the Perry Fire Department was paged to the 2400 block of Willis Avenue at around 1:45 a.m. The inside of the house was being remodeled, and Eiteman reported that one of the workers accidentally hit an electrical line in the wall. The fire proved difficult to battle, because as Eiteman explained, there had been several remodels on the house, with the ceilings and walls being added to instead of replaced. That resulted in several dead spots that firefighters couldn’t get to, so they ended up having to tear every wall and ceiling out in the house in order to fully extinguish the fire. It also took around two hours of fighting the fire from the outside before it was safe for firefighters to enter the structure to put out the seeds.

The fire was completely extinguished and the scene cleared at 7:40 a.m. Willis Avenue was closed to all traffic during that time frame. Eiteman said the residents of the house were able to get out okay and there were no injuries reported, though the house was a total loss. The Perry Fire Department was aided by the Woodward Fire Department, the Perry Police Department, and Dallas County Emergency Medical Services.
