A Jefferson man was arrested and faces several charges following a brief standoff Friday night.

Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse says officers were notified around 7:35pm that the victim of an alleged domestic incident told them that her husband, 42-year-old Branden Smith, left their residence in a suicidal mood and had a weapon.

Dispatch then received another call from the victim saying that she was in her vehicle being pursued by Smith in his vehicle. She was trying to get to the law enforcement center. Upon arriving at the LEC, Clouse notes that Smith stopped his pickup truck briefly but then took off. An officer followed him with his lights and sirens activated as a chase ensued. Smith returned to his home in the 300 block of East Lincoln Way. Clouse says the officer had his firearm drawn on Smith and told him to show his hands and get down on the ground.

Smith refused to listen to the officer’s commands as he went inside the home. Clouse points out that he and additional officers, along with deputies from the Greene and Boone County Sheriff’s offices surrounded the residence for the one-hour long standoff. During that time, Clouse says he had brief phone conversations and could hear Smith talk through the windows of the home. Smith refused to come out of the home unless all law enforcement officers and deputies left. Clouse then coordinated teams of law enforcement to gain entry into the home and apprehended Smith without further incident.

Clouse says they found the firearm in the pickup truck and no one was injured in the incident. Smith was then taken to Greene County Medical Center Emergency Room to be medically evaluated. Once released, Smith was transported to the Greene County Jail. Smith was charged with a Class D Felony for his third or subsequent offense for domestic abuse assault, a serious misdemeanor for eluding officers, and simple misdemeanors for interference with official acts and reckless driving. He was booked and remains in jail under a $5,000 cash-only bond. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
