Today is the start of Daylight Saving Time.

The days are going to get longer and with that in mind, Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams says it’s also a good time to do another housekeeping chore with smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

“Everybody just needs to change the batteries out. Replace all of the batteries in all of your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. And just make sure that everything is working properly.”

Williams adds the fire department typically installs free smoke detectors in homes that don’t have one. However, they are currently out of stock and are applying for grant funds to get more. Williams says they will also accept donations with checks made out to the Jefferson Fire Association and it can be dropped off at City Hall.
