With rapidly melting snow and additional rainfall the last couple of days, roads in Greene County have taken a hit.

Greene County Engineer Wade Weiss tells Raccoon Valley Radio it’s a horrific situation on the gravel roads. He points out that saturation has caused ruts and sunken areas on gravel roads, plus there were over 50 areas across the county Wednesday where water was either over the roadway or there was standing water. Weiss says crews are out today moving signage to wherever there continues to be water on the roadways and they have been working on digging out culverts that are either iced over or clogged with snow. He adds that they will be working this weekend and will use trucks with draggers on them to smooth out the gravel roads.

The public is reminded to not drive through an area that has been marked with a sign as impassable. Greene County School District buses will continue to run on hard surfaces only for the rest of this week.

As for the Jefferson Public Works Department, Director Dave Morlan says all of their drainage systems and the wastewater treatment plant are functioning properly. He points out two liftstations on the north end of town on Mulberry Street were backed up due to an overabundance of water on Wednesday, but are now working properly again. Morlan notes the main issue for the liftstations is there is too much water for them to keep up.
