The ACGC track and field teams got their first opportunities at competitive action earlier this week at the Iowa State Boys and Girls Indoor Classics. Good marks were turned in all around the complex over the two days, but the shot put athletes in particular stood out with their improvements from this time last season.

Senior Madison McDermott finished in 8th on the girls side with a throw of 35 feet flat. A 2018 state qualifier, McDermott’s longest throw last year was 38 feet, 5.5 inches. Sophomore Mady Kelsey finished in 33rd with a throw of 31 feet, three inches. That mark is also just about three feet shy of her best throw last season, which was 34 feet, 5.5 inches.

On the boys side, junior Quynton Younker placed 39th in the shot put with a launch of 41 feet, ten inches. That throw is just a foot shy of a personal best for Younker. Classmate Sam Madsen was able to record a personal best with his throw. Madsen crossed the 40 foot mark for the first time in his career with a throw of 40 feet, 1.25 inches. His previous best was 39 feet, 7.5 inches at the state qualifying meet last year in Van Meter.

The girls will next compete at Greene County on Monday while the boys will next hit the fields on Tuesday at Audubon.
