People affected by the recent floods throughout Iowa got some good news over the weekend, as President Donald Trump approved the emergency declaration requested by Governor Kim Reynolds.

The President expedited his Major Disaster Declaration at the request of the Governor, and the 56 counties included in the declaration will be able to receive even more aid from the federal government. Dallas, Greene, Guthrie, and Adair counties are among those listed in the disaster declaration, and residents now qualify for Federal Public Assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The program includes long-term recovery assistance for public entities and select nonprofit organizations.

Additionally, the counties affected also now have access to hazard mitigation funding, which will allow local governments to take steps to reduce or eliminate long-term risks to people and property before any natural disasters occur. The programs made available through federal sources are in addition to assistance through state programs for residents, such as the Iowa Individual Assistance Grants and Disaster Case Management. Governor Reynolds thanked the President for acting swiftly on her request, and she feels the assistance provided will be instrumental as the state recovers from the flood event.
