A Panora man, who mistakenly had his prostate removed, won his medical malpractice lawsuit in Polk County District Court.

Sources say a jury awarded over $12 million to 67-year-old Rickie Huitt after he underwent surgery to remove his prostate, following a mix-up between him and another patient’s prostate biopsies in a scanner reading error at the Iowa Clinic. Sources say the surgery was done in April of 2017 and court records show the lawsuit against the Iowa Clinic was filed in December of 2017.

A pathologist admitted to misdiagnosing Huitt, leading him to believe that he needed to have surgery in order to live beyond the five years that he was given if he did not have the surgery. After Huitt’s prostate was removed further test results showed he had no cancer and reports say he has had continuing complications as a result of the surgery.
