earthday2005-232x300

Earth Day is Monday, April 22nd, which means it’s time again for students in the two Perry elementary schools to observe Earth Week with the help of the City of Perry and the Perry Hy-Vee.

The educational programming will begin this Wednesday, as Brian Eiteman from the Perry Recycling Center will give a talk about why recycling is important for the environment. He will also collect toilet paper tubes from the students, with the class that gathers the most at each school winning a pizza party from Hy-Vee. The program will be held at 10 a.m. at Perry Elementary, and at St. Patrick’s Catholic School at 10:30. Activities will continue Thursday, as Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson gives students an update on the environmental practices being used by the City. Peterson will present to Perry Elementary at 2 p.m., and St. Pat’s at 2:30.

Earth Week will wrap up on Friday with what’s typically the student’s favorite part: tree planting. Perry Parks and Recreation Director John Anderson will be planting two trees at 1 p.m., one at Perry Elementary, and the other close by at the McCreary Community Building. Students from both schools and the public are invited to take part in the tree planting. Weather permitting, the City staff may also show off their new tree spade.
