The Greene County boys were in the Nevada soccer tournament on Saturday. Class 1A sixth ranked Greene County boys went 1-2, losing to a pair of rated teams. Coach Carl Behne’s Rams started the Day with two-time 1A defending State Champion Iowa City Regina, currently ranked number 2. The teams were tied 3-3 at the end of regulations, then went straight to penalty kicks instead of overtime. The Regals won 4-3 on penalty kicks and won the contest, 4-3. The Rams then lost to number six in 2A, Gilbert. The loss was by a 2-1 final, the same score when the Tigers beat the Rams in Grand Junction less than two weeks ago. The final match was a 5-1 win over Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) a team the Rams lost to twice last season.
Greene County is 8-4 heading into the week with all the losses to ranked teams.

Coach Behne said the match with Regina was outstanding. Junior Gutierrez had two goals and Luis Velazco added one. Regular goalkeeper Cael Fisher is out after appendix surgery, and the coach said Victor Santos played a strong match in goal.

The coach said the match with Gilbert started just six minutes after the Regina contest ended. “It was a grind of a morning. Yunior Carballo had our goal. Victor again played well in goal. We missed a PK (Penalty Kick) with four minutes to go.”

John Goble got his first varsity start as goalie and earned praised from the coach vs. Kuemper. Junior had all five Greene County goals and Austin Delp had an assist.

“Overall, a good day. Lots of little things still to improve on, but we grew as a program. I’m so proud of the boys.”
