As we get closer to the start of summer, many people are starting to take advantage of the warmer weather by hitting the road on motorcycles.

With that in mind, Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn reminds motorists to be aware of the two-wheeled vehicles. Vaughn asks people to always be vigilant while driving, though he says that becomes more critical with the presence of motorcycles on the roads because they’re harder to notice. “Just be aware that they’re out there and they’re going to be coming up on you. They’re a lot smaller than a vehicle, so they get into those blind spots sometimes. So when you’re going to pass a vehicle, make sure you check twice before you step out into that other lane.”

Vaughn also emphasizes the importance of wearing helmets for people who ride motorcycles. He says Iowa doesn’t have helmet laws, but he encourages riders to wear one anyway as they can prevent a lot of injuries and save lives.
