The Greene County High School boys’ soccer team continues to make history in just its second year in the sport. Coach Carl Behne’s Rams won the 1A Substate 8 title on Saturday in Oakland at Riverside High School over AHSTW (Avoca) to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 1A State Tournament on Thursday, May 30 in Des Moines.

The eighth ranked Rams improved to 14-5 on the season with a 5-2 victory over the sixth ranked Vikings who end the season at 18-3. The Rams never trailed, but the scored was tied 2-2 at the half, before the Rams scored three unanswered second half goals.

Junior Gutierrez, Iowa’s leader in goals and points scored, had three goals on Saturday to boost his season total to 55. Luis Velazco opened the scoring for the Rams just minutes into the contest, his 26th. Following the “hat trick” by Junior, Isaiah Losee finished the scoring with a goal with just under 10 minutes left to play.
