It’s not how he planned it, but Panorama junior Kolby Shackelford became the Class 2A individual state champion in golf on Friday after the second round of the tournament was canceled.

Heavy rains Thursday night through Friday morning left the course in Marshalltown wet and sloppy Friday when golfers were supposed to play a second 18 holes to determine the state title. However because of course conditions the Iowa High School Athletic Association decided to cancel the second round in all classes and declare champions based solely on Thursday’s scores.

Shackelford sat atop the leaderboard at the end of Thursday after shooting an even par 69, three shots better than the second place finisher. The title comes after Shackelford missed out on first place by just a single stroke last year.

Coach David VanAhn said it’s not how they wanted the tournament to end, but still said having a state champion on the team is fantastic.

“He has put a lot of work in,” VanAhn said. “His parents have put a lot of time and effort into all of his lessons. After the meet I just gave him a big hug and said ‘thanks for taking the old coach along for the ride’ because it was a glorious one that’s for sure.”

As for the rest of the squad, Panorama finished fourth in the team standings with a total score of 321. Des Moines Christian was the team champion at 304. Sophomore Wyatt Appleseth tied for 20th place with an 11-over 80, Lucas Leiferman shot 85, Trey Cobb posted an 87, Ryan Klinge finished at 89 and Dylan Douglass carded a 93.
