The 2019 Iowa legislative session has been wrapped up for a few weeks, which has given lawmakers a chance to get a clear look at what they accomplished this year.

State Senator Jake Chapman, (R) from District 10, feels the Legislature got a lot done, largely because of the majority his side of the chambers possesses. “Over the last couple of years, the Republicans have had a majority in both the House (and) Senate, and of course the Governor, and we’ve ran a very bold and conservative agenda. And our focus this legislative session was to continue to build on the successes we’ve had over the last couple of years, and I feel very good about what we’ve been able to accomplish this session.”

Some of the specifics Chapman points to include: a budget that he feels is fiscally responsible and sustainable, which also prioritizes the desires of constituents; restarting the process of passing a constitutional amendment on keeping and bearing arms; protecting free speech on college campuses; and the bipartisan children’s mental health bill. Looking ahead to next year, Chapman says Iowans can expect more discussion on property tax relief, as well as revisiting some bills that didn’t make it through this year.
