The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn School Board convened Monday evening in regular session.

The meeting began with the selection of Bart Banwart as the new Board Vice President, replacing Kelli Book who resigned in May. Superintendent Greg Dufoe felt Banwart was a good selection for the office, due to a couple factors. “Well really, it’s no different than any other time when they elect officers. They talk about it and often times it’s about interest. You know, who on the Board has some experience and is interested in being an officer. And Bart has both of those, he has experience and he’s willing to function in that role, and the Board was obviously okay with that by virtue of the fact that they approved it unanimously.”

With the new Vice President selected, the Board then moved on to an update on the technology for learning initiative, where Director of Innovative Learning and Communication Travis Wilkins outlined the specifics of the first year of implementation. After that, they took up several action items, starting with approving the District’s priorities for the next legislative session, which included a focus on mental health, state funding, and supplemental state aid. Next, the Board approved the District’s achievement goals, as developed by the School Improvement Advisory Committee. Following that, they approved the newest version of the certified staff handbook, which was updated during recent negotiations with teachers and support staff. The final action item was approval of the “Return-To-Play” policy for concussion protocol during athletic events, which was mandated by the state.

The Board was then updated on the latest regarding the bond referendum campaign and the new dates for the upcoming school board election. The meeting concluded with a closed session to discuss the District’s emergency operations plan, followed by approval of the plan in open session.
