Greene County High School picked up Heart of Iowa Activities Conference softball and baseball victories last night in Nevada. The softball final was 6-5 and the baseball score was 6-4. Coach Tom Kennedy’s softball team improved to 7-15 overall and 4-7 in the conference, while Coach John Hupp’s baseball team is now 6-16 and 3-9.

In baseball, Brent Riley picked up the pitching victory. He allowed only four hits as he improved his pitching record to 3-4. The Rams had 11 hits and led from stat to finish thanks to a four run first inning. Greene County scored its final two runs in the fifth. The Cubs had one run in the first, two in the fifth, and one in the seventh. The Rams were charged with two errors and Nevada had three.

Austin Delp had a triple to start the game and later added a single. Joe Anderson, Carter Morton, and Clayton Smith also each had two hits with one apiece from Tyler Teeples, Riley, and Nick Breon. Smith had two runs batted in with Teeples and Morton each driving in one.The loss ended a five game losing streak for the Rams and dropped the Cubs to 3-14 overall and 2-10 in the Heart of Iowa.

In softball, the Rams trailed 4-0 after two innings, but scored twice in the third, fourth, and fifth innings for a 6-4 lead. The Cubs put a single run on the board in the seventh for the final margin as they fell to 6-18 overall and 3-9 in league play.

Greene County had eight hits with Megan Carey collecting a triple and Emma Hoyle hitting a double. Carey and Izzy Bravard each had three hits from the one and two spots in the batting order. Emma Stream had a single to go with Hoyle’s double as the eighth grade battery each had a hit. Hoyle had two runs batted in with one each from Carey, Jenna Beyers, Carmyn Paup, and Kyla Beyers.

On the pitching rubber, Hoyle allowed three earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three batters. The Greene County defense was charged with six errors, but despite the miscues the Rams won for the third straight time.

The softball Rams host Roland-Story (Story City) tonight at the City diamond on E. Lincolnway in a game that was not on the original schedule. Varsity game time is approximately 7:30 p.m. and it can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. The Rams were originally scheduled to host Boone in non-conference baseball last night, but activities department officials notified Raccoon Valley Radio late last week that the contest with the Toreadors had been cancelled.
