Four people were injured and two were airlifted to Des Moines hospitals following a two-vehicle wreck on Highway 169 at the intersection of Interstate 80 in DeSoto Sunday afternoon.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, at about 3 p.m. a 2019 Toyota 4Runner driven by 60-year-old Scott Toland of Winterset was exiting I-80 westbound. He turned south onto 169 and was struck from behind by a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 70-year-old Constantino Alvarez of Estherville, which was travelling southbound on the highway. The truck was carrying two passengers and rolled before coming to rest on its top in the west ditch. The SUV came to rest in the southbound lane. The wreck blocked traffic on the highway and exit ramp while emergency crews were attending to the incident.

Toland was taken by MercyOne Air Ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. A passenger in the truck, 63-year-old Michael Bradshaw of Estherville, was transported by Life Flight to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Alvarez and his other passenger, 41-year-old Matthew Mathine of Estherville, were taken by Dallas County Emergency Medical Services to Mercy and Methodist, respectively. The current conditions of the four individuals is unknown, but each of them was wearing a seatbelt. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, DeSoto Police and Fire departments, Van Meter Fire Department, and the Iowa Department of Transportation also assisted at the scene.
