A structure fire turned into a separate police investigation in Jefferson Wednesday evening.

According to the Jefferson Police Department, police officers, along with the Jefferson Fire Department and Greene County Ambulance responded to a call of a building fire at 6:55pm in the 300 block of Lincoln Way. Fire Chief Jack Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio the fire was located in a second-story bathroom of an apartment. The fire was contained in the bathroom, which caused an estimated $10,000 in damages. Williams believes the fire started from a space heater. He adds all occupants were able to get out of the building safely and no one was injured.

When fire crews were inside the bathroom, Williams notes they found a suspected smoke device in plain sight. The police report shows the occupants gave officers permission to do a search and found the smoking device, along with suspected marijuana, marijuana wax and unlabeled prescription drugs. The report indicated that charges are pending lab test results. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
