Friday night, the DC-G Football team took the field against Harlan in the First Round of the Class 3A Playoffs.  The game was hyped as a defensive showdown, and that’s exactly what the game was and more.

DC-G came up with the win, narrowly, 9-7.

The Mustang defense was terrific all night long, minus one 78 carry by Harlan’s Quarterback, Johnathon Monson in the early going, that eventually lead to the only score of the game for the Cyclones.

At halftime, Harlan took a one possession lead into the intermission, 7-0.

DC-G came out fresher, more fiery, and tougher in the third quarter and the momentum had certainly shifted back towards the Mustangs.  Defensively, Jayme Augusma had a huge night, as well as Dawson Lego with his two interceptions.

Harlan was pinned deep in their own territory late in the third quarter and was forced to punt.  A mishap by the Harlan punter gave the ball back to DC-G on the Cyclones 15 yard line.  It seemed like this was the best opportunity for the Mustangs to tie it up, which they did.  A 9-yard touchdown pass from Ty Walker to Isacc Boley punched the ball across the goal line to knot up the game at 7 a piece.

In the 4th quarter, DC-G’s defense pinned Harlan deep in their own territory, once again, and a special teams gaffe for the Cyclones cost them, for the second time on the night.  A bad snap went sailing over the head of the Harlan punter for a safety, which gave the narrow lead to the Mustangs, 9-7, which is where the scored ended for the night.

Harlan had one final opportunity late in the 4th quarter, but a second interception by Dawson Lego iced the game, and the Mustangs just needed to kneel to end the game.

DC-G’s defense was stellar all night, and the offense provided just enough productivity to get the Mustangs over the hump and past Harlan.

Dallas Center-Grimes will face Council Bluffs Lewis Central next Friday night on the road.  Lewis Central blazed past Oskaloosa last night, in the first round by the score of 44-0.  One more win for the Mustangs, and DC-G will be moving on to the UNIDome.

Kickoff is set for 7:00pm, and we’ll have live, play-by-play coverage on the Raccoon Valley Radio Network.  Pregame coverage will begin at 6:00pm.  The game will be aired on 99.7FM and AM1310 KDLS, streamed online at RaccoonValleyRadio.com, or on the free KDLS mobile app.
