Practices officially begin tomorrow for Iowa high school Winter sports for boys. Greene County High School has its own wrestling and basketball programs. Any boys wanting to swim do so in Boone under an athletic sharing agreement.

Chris Nelson begins his fourth season at the helm of the boys’ basketball team after a decade at Glidden-Ralston. His first two teams were over the .500 mark, but last year the win total dropped to seven. The coach is optimistic about increasing the win total this season, and he’ll have plenty of players to choose from. Nelson estimates he’ll have between 35 and 40 boys in grades nine through 12 show up for practice tomorrow.

Zach Beekman starts season number two as head coach of the wrestling program after coaching the Rams on the middle school level. His first season saw a winning dual meet record, increased number, and two state qualifiers, both of whom graduated. He expects around 30 to report to Monday’s first practice. A few girls could be out to with the intention of wrestling in “girls only” events around the state.
