After 18 years on the job, Dallas County Assistant to the Engineer Bryan DeJong is riding off into the sunset.

DeJong is retiring effective the end of this month, after a career that spanned two different County Engineers. He was frequently called upon to be project manager for larger jobs around the County, including most recently for the new cold storage facility at the central maintenance site. County Engineer Al Miller says it’s been great working with DeJong and wishes him well. “Bryan’s the kind of guy that you can’t replace. I mean, with the amount of knowledge and experience Bryan has, and his work ethic and his attitude towards what he gives to Dallas County, he’s not a person that you can replace. It’s kind of a happy and a sad thing; we’re happy for Bryan that he’s had a great career and given a lot to Dallas County, but he’ll definitely be missed.”

To Miller’s point, the County will not be hiring a new Assistant to the County Engineer, and will instead hire a third engineering technician and spread the duties among the three of them. As for DeJong himself, he says working for Dallas County has been a career well spent. “I would just like to say ‘thank you’ for everything over the last 18 years. All the support that I’ve gotten, and the experience has been very good. So that’s very much appreciated. It’s a little bittersweet; I’m very much looking forward to retirement, but I will miss the work and the people that I worked with over the years.”
