The warmer weather may have certainly played a factor in bringing lots of people to downtown Jefferson for a new event this past weekend.

The two-day Winter Festival was held at the former hardware store at the intersection of Chestnut and East State streets. The event featured 47 decorated Christmas trees that lined the interior of the building and attendees could vote on their favorite. The majority of votes went to Holiday RV’s tree that was decorated by Jane Finch and Kim Christensen. A few of the trees were donated to a silent auction, which the proceeds went to New Opportunities Toys of Greene County program. Event Chair Philip Heisterkamp said $1,230 was raised.

Other highlights included a horse and carriage ride around the square on Saturday night and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus Sunday. Committee member Beth Vander Wilt described her impression of the inaugural event.

“I think we’re all just really, really pleased with just the outcome and all of the volunteers that helped us and all the countless donations of trees. I mean when we first started planning we thought maybe we’ll get 15, maybe we’ll get 20. Well we’ve surpassed that and even doubled it. We’re so pleased with the support we’ve received and all the positive comments. We know that this will continue and just keep growing.”

The committee is looking to make this successful event an annual tradition.
