An Adel homeowner is safe following a fire Saturday morning.

According to Dallas County Dispatch, Adel, Redfield and Dallas Center fire departments responded to a house fire at 421 North 9th Street in Adel at 7:13am. Adel Fire Captain Jim Uthe tells Raccoon Valley Radio when they arrived on scene, there were ten-foot high flames coming from the front of the home and there was a power line that was down preventing access to the home for fire crews.

Uthe says they blocked off the power line and MidAmerican Energy responded to shut the power off. Uthe adds, fire crews were able to extinguish the flames, and two bedrooms on the back of the home were salvageable, but the rest of the home sustained severe fire, smoke and water damage. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the home and save two vehicles that were near the back of the structure, along with the detached garage.

The homeowner, Jodi Cook, and her two dogs were home at the time of the fire and were able to get out safely. Uthe believes the fire originated near the front door, and while the official cause of the fire remains under investigation, the suspected cause is related to a space heater. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
